How to Get More Engagement on Your Facebook Posts!

post-59518-facebook-like-meme-dumptruck-I-Shdi-e1490200772650.png

Ever wonder why your posts aren’t getting any likes?

Facebook is a social media platform that is constantly changing and being updated, and lately it has become very business-oriented, with more opportunities to have your posts viewed if you participate in their business features by basically buying your audience.

While there is a time and a place for using this tool to get huge exposure on a powerful post and draw people to your business Facebook page, what I want to share is more for the everyday person to increase views on their own personal profile and posts to promote their brand, attract more followers and friends, and create more opportunities for themselves without spending money to get likes!

The goal is to get your posts to the top of your friends’ news feeds so that they are viewed right away, and this isn’t as simple as being the most recent post anymore. Facebook algorithms are changing in favour of profiles that are dominating the platform, and I’ve learned a few tricks to do that!

Keep reading if you want to learn some of the secrets I’ve discovered about Facebook engagement…

Text is not enough anymore!

facebook-live.jpg

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, making use of the Facebook Live tool.

Allow me to let you in on this “good, better, even better, best” trick:

Nothing but text in your post is okay every once in a while, but you will definitely find it doesn’t get as much engagement.

Posts with photos attached are viewed more than text.

Videos are viewed more than photos.

Live videos are viewed even more than uploaded videos!

Why is this? Well, not only are people more likely to stop when they see an exciting photo or video than just plain text on their newsfeed, but Facebook algorithms actually wash out posts that don’t make use of photos and videos in favour of people using their new live tool and posting more creative content that includes other media!

So getting your post higher up on news feeds starts off as simple as attaching a related photo to all of your text posts, and making an effort to capture more videos of things like sunsets, beach days, cute puppies, etc. instead of just photos. And if you really want to put yourself out there, try going live! Facebook will actually notify people that your video is live, increasing your views even more.

Post More Content!

Facebook algorithms favour people who post frequently, so even if you have a really great post, it may not be seen much if you only post once a week.

no-likes-on-my-facebook-status-okay

There are different suggestions out there on the internet for the best posting frequency, but I’ve found that 2-4 posts per day has worked out really well for me!

You can play around with how often you post and compare how many likes and comments you’re getting to find the sweet spot for you! I would definitely recommend posting at least once every two days to keep your posts at a higher priority level so that they’re viewed by more people.

Don’t Post Too Much Though… Content Still Matters!

The problem with being told to post more is that a lot of people will start posting all over the place just for the sake of having a high post frequency, without putting much thought into their posts.literal.jpg

You definitely don’t want to post so much that you start to annoy anyone, but on top of that, you want each post to be intentional and make sure that it adds value to your friends/followers, because Facebook algorithms also prioritize posts that are getting a lot of likes and comments.

Have you ever wondered why, when you log onto Facebook, if you missed an engagement/pregnancy/birth announcement, it’s right at the top of your feed? That’s because these posts usually have hundreds of likes and tons of comments of congratulations to the poster. So more engagement on a post = larger audience. Facebook will actually start off most posts by opening them up to 10-20% of your friends/followers, and this number will increase with time if the post is getting lots of engagement. So some of your posts may not even be viewed by 90% of your friends which is why you’re getting 2 likes. When I learned this, my mind was blown!facebook-fatigue.jpg

So the lesson: don’t be boring! Put thought and effort into putting out purposeful content and it will absolutely start to pay off.

When to Post?!

best-time-to-post-on-facebookI haven’t mastered this one yet, but I’m learning from other blogs about prime posting times on social media networks.

Check out this blog for information on prime posting times and how to attract more engagement by timing your content accordingly!

What you do want to note is that this will definitely vary depending on your audience (18-25 year olds tend to be on social media later on weeknights than 55-65 year olds, just as an example). You also want to think about the time zones of your audience if you have international friends and followers, and the content that you’re posting. Personally, if I wanted to do one big power post about how I help people create freedom in their lives to live every day like the weekend and chase after their dreams, I would save that for a Sunday night when most people are dreading waking up early the next day to drag themselves to work and sit in a cubicle for 8 hours. Again, just an example!

Engage More on Other Posts!

This one is really interesting. The way the algorithms work actually allows you to control your audience! If you want specific people to see your posts, engaging more on their profiles will bump your next posts to the top of their news feeds. Exciting, right? If you’re an entrepreneur then you’re probably thrilled to know that it’s not the people who like and comment on your posts that see them more, but rather the people who receive likes and comments from you!

face345.jpg

This means you can choose who you want to view your content, go and interact with them (find recent posts they’ve made and genuinely comment and connect with them, don’t be fake!) and in turn they will start to see more of your posts. This is a win-win situation because not only do they see your content, but they will also feel more connected with you because you’ve been engaging with them!

What I do is create a custom list on Facebook with people I am prospecting in my business, and then make a point to click on the list once a day, and scroll through the list’s news feed which filters out all my other friends, and comment on as many posts as I can. It’s a great way to narrow down your audience to target people specifically without them knowing that’s the reason they’re seeing your content. They won’t have any idea you’ve added them to this list as it’s simply a way for you to organize your friends from your account.

I also have a list for my current team members in my business to make sure I set aside time to engage with them on social media without getting distracted by other posts on my feed!

Facebook algorithms are much more complex than what I’ve explained, and I’m sure there are many more hacks to get your posts bumped up to the top of people’s feeds, but these are some surefire ways to increase your engagement and start to master the art of personal branding on Facebook!

Let me know if you have any other tips and tricks. I’d love to hear them! I’m attending a business conference with Tony Robbins 🙌🏼 guest speaking this summer which has segments on social media so I’m always excited to learn more!

3 Instagram Theme Ideas to Attract More Followers!

main-qimg-662080842dcff437450f77b71704ff74-c

Instagram is a powerful platform for anyone to develop a successful personal brand!

Social media is changing the way we do business! Have you noticed more and more paid advertisements on Snapchat, or celebrity endorsements on Instagram? People with high follower counts are referred to as “influencers” because they have a large circle of influence to promote anything they choose.

Now, whether your goal is to have enough followers to start taking on paid sponsorship deals, or you simply want to promote your own brand and either increase your audience as a business owner or be recognized by potential employers, surely you can understand the importance of having a strong presence on these social media platforms.

When people are deciding who to follow on Instagram, there are many factors – content, profile photo, bio, etc… but one of the main reasons they click that follow button is because the user’s feed is attracting and visually appealing. More followers = more views on posts = a larger audience to influence, so this is definitely what you want! Many Instagram users are “theming” their photos to create a cohesive, eye-catching feed and boost their follower count.

There are many different ways to do this, but here are a few of my favourite themes!

White Border Minimalism

This is also a very easy edit using apps such as Squaready to add a white border to any photo. You could crop the photo to be a square first like the photo on the right or use all different shapes and orientations like the photo on the left depending on which look you prefer!

Pick a Filter/Colour Scheme and Stick to it!

I love filters, specifically the preset filters on the app VSCO Cam. You can simply Google “VSCO Instagram themes” or check out this awesome blog to find a ton of ideas, but here are a few examples below to spark your imagination! It’s so simple to pop a filter on your photos, upload them to Instagram, and have an easy, fun theme!

Create a Pattern!

This is actually my own Instagram profile. I love posting motivating quotes that I find on Pinterest so I decided to take it one step further and choose only quotes with black writing on a white background, and then one more step further by posting them in a specific order to make a super cool theme!

As you can see, I started off with the quotes all in one column but ended up finding it too difficult to keep up with posting one quote for every two photos so I decided to change it up and post four photos in between each quote and ended up loving the pattern even more!

You could play around with this in many ways by alternating with fun quotes, black and white photos, pictures of something specific like different flowers every 3 or 4 posts, or even a solid colour thrown into the mix in a pattern. I love the way my Instagram looks and I’ve had lots of people comment on how much they like how aesthetically pleasing the theme is!

No matter what theme you decide to use for your Instagram, it’s important that you pick something you love and can stick to! Just remember to stay consistent – once you decide on a theme, you don’t want to have one random photo breaking it up in the middle.

You will definitely find that having a theme to tie your profile together inspires you to post more content and will help your branding a lot as you attract more of a following to your social media platforms!

Good luck and happy posting! Let me know which theme ideas you like best and send me links to your profiles when you’re happy with your feeds!

Awesome Apps for Travelling!

iphone-410311_1280

With the right apps, our smartphones can be the best travel guides!

Anyone who has ever been on a fast-paced trip knows how frustrating it can be trying to find flight details, look up directions, attractions, and airport transfers, figure out if 600 Czech Korun is a good deal on something you can get for 40 dollars in Canada, and still manage to fit in all the sightseeing you want to do without being glued to your phone trying to Google all the answers.

The right apps can give your phone superpowers! It’s all about finding the most efficient, well-rounded apps that either combine many of the tasks you’re trying to complete in one central application, or simply streamline the process and make the information you need live and accessible at all times.

Here are some of my favourite apps that really helped me out while backpacking in Europe!

TripCase

unnamed

This app manages flight itineraries better than anything else I’ve ever tried! When I downloaded it, it had automatically searched through the emails on my phone to find booking confirmations from airlines and programmed them into my itinerary for me. I was blown away!

From flight numbers, to airport maps, to boarding passes and more, this app stores all the information you could possibly need on the day of your flight! It even has a built-in weather app and is connected to Uber to help you quickly find a ride to or from the airport.

If you’re on a business trip, or just prefer to keep track of your expenses, you can pay $7.99/year for the receipts function that allows you to take photos of all your receipts and store them in that specific trip’s folder.

To add a new trip, you can manually enter flight numbers or simply forward your booking confirmation email to TripCase and it will show up in your app, complete with phone numbers of the airlines for each flight, PDFs of your confirmations under the documents tab, and live updates when your terminal/gate is announced or when you are able to check in online to get your boarding pass.

You can also forward any other confirmation emails for attractions, hotels, car rentals, etc. and that information will be stored in the app as well!

Viator

1200x630bbNow, once you’ve landed… where do you start? Some people like to research and plan their itineraries in advance, while others like to get there and figure it out as they go! If you’re the type of person who wants to be spontaneous and explore without too much planning, you may find yourself stumped for where to start once you’ve checked into your hotel and set out for the day. I usually start with a very basic Google search to learn more about the city/country, and read up on the top things to do and see, then search for deals and tickets for different excursions, tours, museum entries, etc.

Viator is my new best friend because it combines all of that in one amazing, user-friendly app! Imagine having a pocket guide to each city you’ll be travelling to without lugging around a bunch of books… that’s exactly what this app is.

There are videos with tons of information on the city and its famous sights, overviews of each attraction with popular tours and activities, special deals, verified reviews, and more! You’ll feel like an expert without wasting your time scanning through different articles and Wikipedia pages for the info you want! It’s all in one place complete with photos galore!

Google Maps

Google-Maps-New-Icon

I personally prefer Google Maps over the regular Maps app that comes pre-installed on

iPhones because of the features it includes!

Not only can you use Google Maps for driving, walking, and even public transportation directions, but there are some other really cool features that come in handy while travelling!

  1. You can download an entire area for offline use! This is amazing for travellers who don’t have reliable data or wireless internet connection.IMG_6736
  2. You can save different locations to your favourites to find them easily – this is great for planning out the different places you want to go and then seeing them all pinned on a map (the hearts in the picture below are all the saved locations I have from my trip to London – and the little red circles are the London Underground stations). This also comes in handy because if you haven’t saved an area and you lose internet connection, even though you can’t search for directions you can still see where you are in reference to your saved locations and direct yourself using satellite just by wandering in the right direction. Our WiFi hotspot died a few times during my Europe trip and this was extremely useful!IMG_6732
  3. I mentioned this above, but Google Maps is great for public transportation directions! It almost always has up to date schedules or will at least lead you to the correct website for pricing and maps.

XE Currency Converterunnamed-2

Although it’s easy to type “45 euros to cad” into a Google search and get a quick answer, there is an even simpler way to keep track of multiple currencies when you’re not staying somewhere long enough to get the hang of estimating and you find yourself overwhelmed by the different rates!

There are lots of currency conversion apps but my favourite one is the XE.com app! It allows you to save as many currencies as you want to exchange offline for the times you can’t use Google, and even has a built in calculator so you can factor in things like the foreign exchange rate on your credit card before calculating the total in your local currency.

There are other features of the app as well such as news reports and market trends about currency rates but the features I mentioned are the ones that really helped me while I was away.

Do you have any favourite travel apps? These are just a few of mine but I’m always open to checking out new ones! Comment below if you have an app that saved you on a trip!

5 Reasons Network Marketing is Perfect for Millennial Travellers!

ae34202429d22c3e015521c8afc2bd9a

wanderlust:
(n.) a strong desire or impulse to travel and explore the world

Millennials… this one is for you!

We are a generation driven for change. Despite the job market being much more scarce today than it was when our parents finished school, we are determined. And in addition, we don’t just want a J-O-B. We want more.  More freedom, more passion, more abundance, and most importantly: more fulfillment. We are dreamers! We want to feel like we are contributing to the world on a massive scale, on our own terms. And for the motivated leaders who are prepared to put in the work to achieve these dreams, the opportunities are limitless!

There is a shift happening… The industrial era of the 18th and 19th centuries made way, following the digital revolution, for the information era, which is now coming to an end with the rise of a new era: one of technology, networking, and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs are breaking free from traditional business approaches in search of a better way… The way of the future. A revolution that will one day become our “norm” is starting to get massive attention.

This is where network marketing comes in. Although it isn’t perfect (just like anything else), and it requires commitment and hard work, this business model was the biggest blessing to fuel my wanderlust and help me ignite the fire inside my soul to really do something big! But why does network marketing go hand in hand with the desire to explore the world? Here are 5 reasons why I have found this to be the perfect opportunity for young travellers!

1. We are natural networkers!

It’s almost a no-brainer for today’s youth to align themselves with some sort of company with products or services they believe in and have a passion for, even if it’s just something simple for a bit of extra income on the side of school or full-time work. Why? Because we’re network marketing on our own without even realizing it!

It is completely normal to see a girl posing for a workout selfie on Instagram dressed head to toe in Victoria’s Secret PINK, or a guy showing off his new Jordans on Snapchat, or people all over Twitter hyping up a new restaurant or movie.

But when was the last time Nike said “Thank you, Sarah! After seeing you wearing a Nike sports bra on Instagram, your friends Jenny and Emma were inspired to start working out and came in to purchase some new outfits from us. We’d like to reward you with a referral bonus and continue to reward you as Jenny, Emma, and all of their friends shop with us in the future”?

That sounds crazy, right? Well, that’s what network marketing is all about. Real people are being rewarded for sharing products and services that they genuinely use and love! Word of mouth marketing is proving to be a much better distribution method than other advertising techniques with the rise of social media as a platform for influence.

Since we’re going to post about the things we love anyways, we might as well get paid for it at the same time! Who doesn’t love posting pictures lounging poolside on an exotic island or backpacking through Europe? What about sharing our favourite makeup or smoothie recipes or our inspiring health journeys?

We share these things with our networks because they excite us, and of course, travel excites a lot of other people too! So while doing something you would already do naturally, you’re inspiring your friends to partner with you and build the type of freedom that allows all of you to travel together!

2. Residual income to fund your trips!

Surely we would all love to travel – but of course seeing the world isn’t always cheap. From plane tickets, to accommodation, to food, to sightseeing, and don’t forget this one: the money we’d lose if we couldn’t be working our regular jobs while on vacation. What if there was a way to make extra money to save for a trip, AND (wait for it) even continue to earn money while traveling?!

With the right network marketing company, there is no cap on how far your income can grow if you apply yourself, learn the skills to be successful, and stay consistent! What may start out as a few extra dollars on the side can very possibly replace your full time income down the road and fund your wildest dreams to see the world at a young age.

The power of residual income allows network marketers to not only work from anywhere in the world with a WiFi connection, but get this – even if you’re not “working” on your business, you can actually continue to earn money on your trip from work that you’ve already done! Compare it to being a successful author – J.K. Rowling continues to get paid writing the Harry Potter series years later as more people buy her books.

This quote from Warren Buffett says it all.

main-qimg-38370849531914fe7013a83e14417b61

Warren Buffett shares his views on residual income.

Although I’m sure we would all love some extra cash, it is important to note that financial success isn’t the focal point here. It’s what we choose do with that money that adds value! Traveling is an amazing motivating factor to earn a bit of extra income and enrich our lives with the best experiences around the world.

3. What’s more important than financial freedom? Time freedom!

Money isn’t the only thing we need to fulfill our dreams of traveling all over the world. There are lots of people who are perfectly capable of affording travel but don’t have enough time!

Even if we work hard to save up for a trip, most of us are relying on someone else (a boss) to get the time off to be able to take a vacation. Even unpaid, this can be hard to accomplish! Most people work 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, just to retire after 40+ years. Where’s the time to live our lives? Of course, hopefully everyone enjoys what they do and doesn’t want a vacation from it, although this isn’t as common as one would hope.

With opportunities arising to take our work with us as long as we have internet connection, and do it on our own time, millennials are defying the status-quo and pushing the boundaries to create more freedom to live every day to the fullest! We don’t want to wait until we’re retired after 40 years to start seeing the world.

Network marketing allows the average person to be their own boss, work around the things they want to do, without having to rely on a third party to tell them if they can or can’t spontaneously jet off for a week in France or take a road trip to New York City!

4. Small business tax deductions!

Quick disclaimer: I am not a tax professional and this is not intended to be financial or tax advice. Everyone is responsible to educate themselves properly on what can and cannot be deducted on taxes so make sure to check with your CPA or the IRS website to be sure. This is simply my own personal experience.

There are many tax advantages that are available to business owners, specifically home-based business owners. As a network marketer, depending on how seriously you are taking your business, you may qualify for some of these write-offs!

Of course, there must be a clear division between business-related travel and personal travel. However, there are many opportunities that will arise to invest in travel for the purpose of growing your network marketing business. For example, if the network marketing company you’ve aligned with opens in a new international market, it can certainly be considered a business trip to visit this new area, make connections, educate yourself on their culture, attend trainings and events for your business, etc. and it is possible to claim a portion of this as a business expense for tax purposes!

tax-deductions-taxes-irs-income-medical-expenses-contributions-retirement_large

Every penny counts! There are many tax advantages available to home-based business owners.

For specifics, of course, be sure to clarify with your accountant, but another example includes using tech devices for business while traveling – a portion of what I paid for my lightweight, portable laptop that came with me to run my business while on vacation, and a portion of the wifi hotspot I purchased to use my phone for business activities in Europe are both examples of possible partial deductions.

If it helps you grow your business, there’s a good chance it can be claimed as an expense and these definitely add up.

Imagine seeing the world and growing an international business all at once!

5. Grow your brand through travel!

Network marketing is becoming more social media-based every day as our influential reach extends with the progression of technology and sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Attraction marketing is defined as the concept of creating value and building intrigue for your target prospect so they are attracted to you and your message.

This requires building a “brand” on social media that revolves around more than simply the company you’ve chosen to align with. People will do business with those they know, like, and trust. This means being genuine, sharing your passions, working to be a positive influence and role model, and developing a brand that portrays your lifestyle and inspires others to strive towards their own dreams with your help.

It’s no secret that everyone loves seeing and sharing travel blogs, photos, videos, etc.

The more you travel, the more new and exciting content you will have to share with your audience. More people will want to follow your journey, and then the people who are attracted to your brand will come to you because they want to live a similar lifestyle!

So not only do you get to enjoy an epic vacation, but your business will grow as a result of you sharing these experiences and living the lifestyle of your dreams. Not a bad gig!

Of course, it takes consistency and other techniques to perfect the art of social media marketing (making sure your posts are seen, keeping a balance in the types of posts, etc.) – but in the end it all comes down to providing valuable content, and who doesn’t love seeing pictures like the ones below?

One last bonus: Travelling = Happiness = Success!

One of my favourite books is The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. This book explains that success does not cause happiness, but rather the opposite – happiness is what primarily fuels success. Achor says, “When we are happy—when our mindset and mood are positive—we are smarter, more motivated, and thus more successful. Happiness is the center, and success revolves around it.”

Travel and network marketing go hand in hand because traveling, exploring different cultures, taking time to discover what we want out of life while strolling through the little streets in Italy or hiking through mountains… every one of these experiences does so much to progress our personal development and enrich our lives. This happiness motivates us and increases our productivity and we can be more successful in our businesses and in life in general!

Your life is too valuable to spend it just getting by! Get out there, follow your passions, and truly live!
