I always knew Social media was a great marketing tool, but I did not realize how much time and effort had to be put into monitoring your channels. Thankfully over the past couple of months, I have found many sites that can help me keep track of it.
Google Analytics is probably my new favorite application. Most of the things that I want to keep track of I can do so through this site. I love that it allows me to track my site’s ROI without it being complicated.
I started my blog site with Bluehost. By doing this, I was able to have access to many plugins which are making my life a lot easier. I signed up for Monsterinsight with my current google analytics account. Now every time I access the admin part of my blog I have all of my data in one place. This plugin allows me to track the traffic on my site, the bounce rate from my Social media platforms, and how long people usually spend on my page.
Before starting this course, I did not know how to grow my Social media platforms or start monitoring my site. It was overwhelming at first. I am glad that I found those two sites to help me in the process.
Last summer I was working at a retail job and I did not know where I was heading. It just seemed like I was moving backward. I had a diploma in the field of my dreams, but I was not getting work. That is when I started looking up different part-time online programs that could broaden my horizons. Since I had already taken a program at Algonquin College, I decided to look at what else they had to offer. That is when I came across the Social media certificate program. After a lot of thinking, I decided to go for it and enrolled in the September 2020 courses. Looking back now, I am so glad I did. I have learned so much in the past four months than I thought was even possible.
After taking this course, I finally decided to launch my blog. It is something I used to deem impossible to achieve. Thankfully this course showed me otherwise.
The biggest thing that I am taking away from this course is how much storytelling can positively affect my Social media strategy. Having a successful platform isn’t just about ROI or how many people see your content, but it’s about creating a relationship with your loyal audience. I now believe that being real and authentic goes a long way. I don’t want to be “plastic” like most people are these days. I want to be me and use my creativity to stand out.
The stories I want to tell are the ones people don’t usually talk about. I want to build a platform to give a voice to those who don’t have one. That is the reason I wanted to get into filmmaking and storytelling in the first place. This course reminded me of that.
I am looking forward to my future in storytelling. I am excited to put into practice everything that I have learned.
“Can you tell me about yourself?” is the question that you will hear hundreds of times over the entirety of your life. I mean it’s a pretty straightforward question, but it is such a hard one to answer. The questions John Jantsch asks us to reflect on in his blog, made it easier for me to have an answer. The question I chose to answer today is “why did you start your business?”.
We will need to go back a few years for this one. As a child, I was always known as the shy girl. I did not have many friends and spent most of my days in my own little world. To this day, the best word to describe me as a person would probably be “dreamer”.
When it came time for me to choose a career path, I knew that I wanted to go to film school. I got the chance to work on a couple of films, but with the pandemic going on, finding a job is harder than it was before. When everything shut down, I started thinking about what I loved doing the most, writing. That is when I started looking more into blogging. I followed groups on Facebook and after contemplating starting my blog for months, I finally did it.
Blogging is allowing me to use my creativity and make a career out of it. I love getting to share my stories and interacting with like-minded people through Social media.
It’s your turn now to answer the question. Who are you?
Networking is one of the best assets you have for the growth of your career. Meeting someone who will introduce you to one of their connections can sometimes happen randomly.
Last summer, the makeup artist for my best friend’s wedding got me in contact with someone who then hired me to work with them on an upcoming film. This is a good example of how important it is to be friendly and make a good first impression. You never know when and where you will come across someone who will further your career. One of my former acting coaches always told me to treat every encounter like an audition. It is important to alway be prepared.
Unfortunately, with the pandemic going on, in-person networking isn’t realistic . Thankfully most of society has turned to Social media to connect and meet new people.
The biggest tool for me at the moment would probably Instagram. This platform allows me to use my creativity to attract my target audience and allows me to interact with other accounts and like-minded people daily. My goal is to build connections and relationships with potential consumers and investors.
Another great tool for me is Facebook. Once the page for my business is up and running, I will invite everyone on my friend list to like and share the page. I mean who knows one of your distant relatives or your aunt’s friend can be a good contact.
In my opinion, in-person networking leads to more opportunities than the internet does. This is why I believe it is important to stand out and make people notice you in a good way.
Figuring out what my Brand is is probably one of the most challenging things for me to do. I am a 22 years old young woman who is trying to figure life out. I think that is what makes me stand out from other bloggers. I have read multiple blogs where the person claims they have life figured out, but the reality is that most people don’t know who they are yet, which is perfectly okay. I am navigating life the same way other young adults in their twenties are which makes me relatable to a lot of people.
One thing that I know for sure is that writing has always been my go-to for an escape. It is how I found my voice and started to know more about myself. Once I have an idea for a blog or a story, I become very passionate and excited about it. I am what a lot of people call a dreamer. I am always thinking about different ideas and concepts for my next projects. I always want to go big and use my creativity as much as I possibly can.
When working, I am the one who always makes sure everyone is alright and feels included. I tend the be the one people go to for help and advice. I am a people person who loves connecting with like-minded people.
No matter what I am doing I give my full 100%. I always want to be satisfied and proud of the work that I accomplish. Having a good work ethic is important to me as well as being authentic and staying true myself.
Social media has become one of the biggest marketing tools for businesses around the world.
While scrolling through Instagram, I came across a post from Lush Cosmetics.
The picture they had posted grabbed my attention immediately as do most of their posts. I find their photography to be aesthetically pleasing as well as creative. I believe that when it comes to companies joining Instagram, they need to invest in a good photographer. Your focus should be to stand out and make people click on your profile. That is how you attract new customers and build a loyal following. A picture is worth a thousand words.
The Lush Social media team is very active when it comes to engaging with their followers. You are probably thinking right now “A lot of companies do that so why does this one stand out?” What caught my eye is the fact that the employee responding to the comments will sign their name at the end. I think this builds a relationship with the customers which will lead them to be loyal to the company and make them feel heard.
One organization that I believe has a weak strategy would be the Nordik nature spa in Chelsea.
I went through some of their posts and noticed a big gap between the number of likes on multiple posts. How can a big company go from over 1k likes on one post and a couple of days later only receive 200 likes? It became clear to me that they do not monitor their platforms. They post at different times and whenever they want. I also noticed that their posts are repetitive. I believe they should take the time to review their strategy and plan posts in advance. I believe they should try to stand out and be creative with their pictures and interact more with their followers regularly.
Social media is taking the world by storm one app at a time. When I was younger, my teachers would always talk about how technology will eventually reduce in-person human interactions. Could they be right? Think about it! People are starting to shop more and more online and if you do go to a shopping center, digital maps of the mall are available through an app. It has gotten so easy to go to places and not talk to people. It’s great if you are in a hurry, but for businesses, not being able to build relationships with their customers might be bad for their sales. Thankfully many businesses are adapting to our modern society.
While I was scrolling through their Instagram feed, I noticed that when responding to followers in their comment section, Lush cosmetics employees will write their names at the end of each of their responses. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this! I feel like that little extra step makes a big difference. Instead of making customers feel like they are talking to a big money-hungry company that does not fully care about their opinion, they can put a person behind the screen.
Having multiple people manage their Social media platforms is a good way to engage with a lot of followers in a short amount of time. Each employee can share their favorite products and give recommendations based on what the customer wants.
I believe that Lush is doing a great job with their Social media strategy and a lot of businesses should think about being more personable online.
I have loved following travel bloggers on Instagram for as long as I can remember since one of my biggest dreams has always been to travel the world.
What catches my eye and makes me follow their account is the photography and creativity behind their posts. Some of my favorite pages to follow are ticket.to.anywhere, wanderlustusblog, wandringspirit, and jennexplores. All of their feeds wrap up three things that I love: Photography, traveling, and living life to the fullest.
Travel bloggers mostly cater to a young adult audience who have the travel bug. The most useful tools for them to build an online presence are Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok. These tools will reach a bigger audience in a shorter amount of time as well as increase engagement. Visuals are what grab people’s attention. You can use as many words as you want, but there is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.
I believe most people love watching “regular” people travel. Personally, it gives me the drive to achieve my goal and gives me ideas on how to plan a trip at lower costs.
Writing has always been a way for me to escape growing up and use my imagination. It has now become easier to share my thoughts and stories with people through Social media. I learned a few things in my Digital Communications course in the past couple of weeks that will help me become a better storyteller. Here is what I have learned.
Before writing your story you must decide if you will be writing in the third or the first person depending on whether you want to be more formal or personal. Once you know what you want to write about and what narrative you will use, take the time to outline all of your information. Always have your end goal in mind before starting to write. The structure of your text should be divided into three parts.
#1: The important information
The first few sentences of your story/article are what will make your audience decide if they will continue to read or not. It is important that they get a sense of what you are writing about. You do not want the important information to be lost underneath less relevant information. After reading the first couple of sentences your audience should know who and what you are writing about.
#2 Additional information
Once your audience knows what the story or article is about, you can go into more detail of what exactly is happening. In this part of the text you can use pictures, videos, or Quotes that can support your story/article.
#3 The end
You should end your piece with extra information that supports what you are writing about. You can add links to videos, blogs or other articles. You can add your opinion or end with a question that has the potential to start a conversation.
The most important thing that you need to remember is that your audience can click away at anytime. You need to clearly state the important information. Don’t add sentences to your piece that will not add colour or support your story.
I personally believe that writing about something you are passionate about or believe in will come across in your writing.
Let me know in the comments below who your favourite storyteller is and why?
Social media has become such a big part of our lives and the biggest marketing tools that is used today.
If you would have asked me a couple months ago what tools I could use to monitor my Social media platforms I would have given the most confused look. Now I understand what it takes to build a successful strategy, and how important it is to listen and monitor as much as you possibly can. Below I listed two of my favourite tools.
While researching different tools for monitoring I discovered Brand24. I found it extremely easy to navigate and easy to understand. All of the information you need is on one dashboard. It calculates the number of mentions, shares, and the emotion your mentions convey.
#2: Google Analytics
Google analytics is very good to measure your ROI and the amount of traffic your Website receives. It also has a feature that allows you to track the amount of traffic that comes directly from your Social media platforms.
I like using both Brand24 and Google analytics since they both offer different features that will help grow your company.
I have been using these two websites to develop my Social media strategy for my blog.
Another important part is to keep track of news and trends. There are many tools you can use, but the main ones that I use are the ones below.
Twitter is definitely my go to for news and updates. You are able to customize your feed and what you see by following people and topics that interest you.
Most politicians, news outlets, and companies have Twitter accounts. It is also extremely easy to use and understand.
Facebook is also a great tool for news and updates in your area. Most people believe that Facebook is only used to stay in contact with people you have come across in your life, but it can be a great tool if used properly.
You can follow pages that update you about current events in your community as well as official pages for news outlets.
Do you know of anymore apps that I could use to get news and updates? Let me know in the comments below.
