How to find your audience through social media?

This can be extremely frustrating especially if you’re trying to start your own business. You spend hours, days, weeks, or even months trying to wrap your head around where to start. Well this is why i’m here to help you out. I was that fool spending months trying to mastermind a great campaign to blast content on 10 different social media platforms. What a waste of time. Of course the main platforms  like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram reached the audience that I needed but not with all the other social platforms, as my father would say “give your head a shake”. Which I did a couple of times realizing all that time was for nothing, but you live and you learn right?

Where to get started?

After all the research that I did, I found the one page which really helped me out, especially since I was such a “noob“.  If you’re a beginner or even a guru in the digital world go to Marketingland.com. This site is very resourceful for all your marketing needs. Here are a couple of points to think about if you’re starting your own business and which platform you should focus on depending on your product:

  • Fast-moving consumer goods will perform better on Facebook than luxury goods because the user base skews younger demographics.
  • Twitter is primarily a news source for its users.
  • Pinterest is the place to be for food and drink related products or content, as well as family or parenting content.
  • Instagram’s audience is primarily female (with projections to even out by 2016) and between the ages of 18 and 44. Clothing, accessories and entertainment-related brands find Instagram attractive for this reason.

Now on a side note this is only a starting point. A cool little strategy I still use to this day is not just a keyword search through googles “keyword planner” which is a totally different topic I will discuss in a later article. I go straight to the social platforms and search the keywords there. Facebook shows how many people are currently talking about that topic, that way you can see if your product has the potential to make some serious coin. You can repeat this process on the other platforms too, to get a greater understanding on where to start posting your content and convert more customers.

Here is a infographic for all the visual learners out there, “myself”. To get a quick understanding of the major platforms and how to create content for each one:

I really hope this article helps you narrow down what content to create on each platform and how to find your audience through social media.
