The search for the ideal client

I never thought that I was good at writing blogs or content. So, when I found out that we had to write blogs for this course I was frightened and excited at the same time.
I plan to open my own Virtual Assistant business and of course, I will have to market myself and the business.
Even before I started this course, I was thinking about how I can find the right social media platform to market my business and the ideal client. It is just natural for me that this will be my first blog post. I did some research on this topic.
Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Starting the search for the ideal client

One of the first things you will read is that you will have to find your “ideal” client to find the right platform to market on. Since I’m still in the beginning stages of developing my business and right now I just know that I will offer social media managing, travel planning and probably project management. I kept my ideal client vague for now.

I found a great blog that helped me get started on my search for an ideal client and the platforms to market on, even though I have not a clear picture of my business yet.

If you look at the info graphic that I found on the blog, you can see, that if your audience is over 30 and if they operate business to business, which mine will probably be. Then it is probably best to market on LinkedIn and Facebook.
If your audience is under 30 then probably Twitter and Facebook are the right platforms for you, depending on what kind of engagement you want from your users.
If you target all ages, then it depends if it is image-focused. If the answer is yes, you will have to publish your content on Instagram, unless you focus only on females. Then it is best to publish your content on Pinterest.
If your business isn’t image-focused however, then LinkedIn and Facebook are the right choices here.

Getting Focused

Of course, this is all very generalized and too broad. Perfect for me right now because I’m in the very early stages of my business. This is just a starting point.

At some point, I will have to focus my look at the ideal client. Because what was mentioned above is just too broad. I will have to get inside the (buyers) mind of my client.  I must find out who will need my services, I will have to take a close look at my competitors, do my research and of course network, network and network and I will have to decide where my passion is. Who I WANT to work for.
That is all part of finding the ideal client and with it the right social media platform to market on.

But the info graphic I posted above helped me a great deal. I now know I must start to market on LinkedIn and Facebook since I will have a target audience that is 25 years and older. I will keep that in mind for now until I am in the final stages with my business and then take another look at who my ideal client is. Who knows maybe we will explore this even in another blog post, but no promises.

COM0014- Blog #3: Knitters Unite or Unwind (Whichever Suits)

Upon initially looking at my target audience, Instagram had seemed like it was a good place to start. After all, this is where I’ve found inspiration and a few other knitters but with some more in depth digging and careful unravelling I found that Instagram wasn’t even listed as a popular place to find other knitters. According to the Craft and Yarn Council website, many prefer other social media sites like Facebook and Ravelry to look up inspiration for projects, find patterns and purchase yarn over it. This is not to say that there’s not a social media community on Instagram but perhaps that most knitters are drawn to other social media sharing sites like Facebook in connecting with others and Ravelry for inspiration.

The reason for this interesting rav-elation is because there’s a good percentage of young people ,between the ages of 18-34, that enjoy knitting as a creative outlet and not only that but do it because they enjoy making things for others; along with the sense of accomplishment it provides. Having experienced the pride of carefully picking the right yarn and needles for each hand knit project myself, it makes sense that my fellow knitters (target audience) would be more inclined to share their successful projects online with family and friends or perhaps even seek advice on how to improve the less successful ones.

So in the era of sharing updates, accomplishments and one of creative endeavours galore perhaps it is time to get even more creative and social with how I post by reaching out onto Facebook and becoming familiar with Ravelry in order to find my knitting peeps.

Blog Post 1: Tools and Resources

Social Bookmarking and Content Gathering

My personal favorite for this one was Twitter, however, I am admittedly more visually stimulated (as I’m sure most are), so Pinterest and Digg are quickly becoming my favorite tools for gathering bites of information – what I mean by this is quick inspiration or clarification, quick fixes (recipes, gift ideas, quick tips or steps on how to do a given task, opinion gathering). Due to the fact that I’ve learned a few things doing social media for an IT department and how private I like to keep all my profiles, Twitter is quickly fading in to the background for me on a personal basis. From an organizational basis, however, I find it incredibly helpful. It allows you the opportunity to respond quickly to questions or requests that aren’t terribly complex or have an involved process attached to it. From an College IT department standpoint, Twitter is really the preferred tool for getting a message out to most students or staff – often times, IT will send out mass e-mail communications to the appropriate audiences if a system has gone down or if upgrades or maintenance is happening, and we get so much feedback that the e-mails are annoying and too frequent. On the other token, if we were to under-communicate or communicate less, people would still complain, so it seems that the only way to win this battle is to communicate only the most time-critical/system-critical information in a mass email, otherwise, stick everything else on Twitter. That way, you’re giving your audience the liberty to pull information from you, rather than being pushed.

Social Monitoring

Hootsuite is certainly the one I use for the department – mind you, the only channel we use is Twitter, but in this regard it allows me to see everything that’s going out, coming in, things that are scheduled, and any direct messages. I have tried using Hootsuite for Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn channels synonymously in the past, but I find it’s really optimized for Twitter.
Blogging

This is an interesting one – I’ve used WordPress for years, and continue to use it in my professional work for blogging and site maintenance, but I have found that Instagram has really changed the idea of blogging for me. If I’m writing an extensive amount of content on something, then naturally a platform like WordPress would be ideal. Instagram, however, is what I use for what I like to call ‘phlogging’ or ‘photo blogging’. It’s a really short and sweet, no bologna application that can capture so much in few words, and I find it more fun because of all of the other creative apps (Picstitch, Pixlromatic) that feed into it.
