Social Medias Effect on Your Attention Span and the Need to Reset

Have you ever caught yourself in a situation where 10 minutes of scrolling through Instagram reels, Tiktoc, or Facebook posts turns into an hour and you’ve barely blinked an eye?  It happens to the best of us.  What if you replace those short ten second videos with a 5-minute presentation? Or a 30-minute lecture video? All of a sudden time is not going by as quick.  From 2000 – 2013 the average person’s attention span had decreased from 12 seconds to 7 seconds. That being said keep in mind that was before the creation of Tiktoc, Instagram reels, and Snapchat spotlight.  Over the course of these past few years social media has done a great job rewiring our attentions spans. Our attention span itself has decreased but, our ability to multi-task has improved accordingly.  We are now able to process information at a faster speed.  The perks of that rewiring are never ending but cons aren’t quite as easy to overlook.  Social media give us the opportunity to access an abundance of information, networks, and ideas just with the taps of a few fingers.  That being said we are humans, and our brain don’t function the same way as these automated apps.  The information overload caused by spending too much time on these apps can cause difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, short attention span, and fatigue.  As addicting and as important as social media is in our day to day lives, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.  It’s important to take some time away and reset and rest your mind.  Some great ways of doing this are; 

  • Reading 
  • Meditation 
  • Listening to music 
  • Arts and crafts 
  • Exercise  
  • Baking 
  • Indulging in self-care 

     These are just a few ideas to help you reset and take a break from social networks as often as you might need.  Keep in mind, disconnecting is just as important at your need to stay connected.  

Fitness Frenzy: Finding the perfect Instagram fitness guru for YOU

I am a huge advocate for fitness. I found my passion for working out and going to the gym when I felt at my lowest. I was unhappy with how I looked, even though there was nothing wrong with me. One day, I decided to join the gym, as my best friend was a regular gym-goer. That was when everything changed. I discovered that I loved working out, and I noticed significant changes, not only just within my body, but also my mind. I felt lighter, happier, and more confident.

Fitness has become a “trend” on social media, especially on Instagram, and to be completely honest, I am totally here for it. Not only do these people have the confidence to post their workouts, and their sweaty faces, all over social media, but they do this out of the goodness of their hearts to help others.

Find the person that best suits YOU

There are numerous people on Instagram, of many different ages and genders, that are a part of the fitness community. I happened to stumble upon a few, but not all of them seemed to work for me. As we all know, everyone’s body types are different, so not every workout plan, meal plan or cardio routine is going to suit our needs, especially with different life schedules, fitness goals and genetics. The best thing to do if you are looking to find an Instagram fitness guru, is to almost “shop around” the different fitness pages, look at their fitness posts and what they do. Are they cardio focused? Do they religiously count macros and micros? Or do they focus on a healthy and balanced eating lifestyle and incorporate heavy lifting and occasional cardio?

Your fitness goals are what YOU want them to be. It is your choice who you want to look up to and who you want to follow. Once you find the right people to help you start your fitness journey, you will immediately start to feel more confident. It is sometimes hard to scroll through Instagram and see people who appear to have the unrealistic body type, but there are people out there who tell it like it is.

Krissy Cela

Krissy Cela, a 23 year old law student in England, supports women by providing them with high intensity workouts, as well has heavy lifting. She creates personalized fitness plans for clients, and manages to balance law school, planning a wedding, and her own personal life. Katie Crewe

Katie Crewe, a young woman from Canada, is a nutrition and fitness coach and she focuses on personal strength. She has a large Instagram following, and is known for doing “explosive” push ups. Motivation is KEY, and Instagram fitness gurus provide all kinds of it

It is hard enough, as a young woman, to go into the gym and be intimidated by all of the big and muscular people, but because of the 3 Instagram fitness gurus that I listed above, my motivation has sky rocketed, and I couldn’t care less about what I look like at the gym and I am no longer shy while working out.
