COM0014 – Blog #1: Don’t Plan Ahead

Let me start by telling you that planning ahead isn’t always the best idea. Imagine anticipating your vacation only to find out it doesn’t go as planned. This is the story of my holiday vacation and how it all went wrong. I had 2 days left before the holiday season and had a long list of activities planned. Then my partner got COVID.

It was Christmas eve and we were off to my cousin’s house for a big seafood dinner. This night was special because it was my first-holiday dinner there. Towards the end of the night, my partner turned to me and told me he wasn’t feeling well. I could see the sweat coming down his face and the look of despair in his eyes. We headed home right away. He ended up with a high fever and tested positive for COVID.

I was devastated. I had waited for this vacation for weeks! I knew that this was a defining moment. Would I sulk and think about all the fun things I planned with my family? Or would I pull back my sleeves and get to work helping my partner get better? I decided to get to work and canceled my plans. My partner needed me! The good news is that he got better in 3 days. I tested negative throughout this ordeal and had no symptoms. The last few days of my vacation were salvaged! But this time I went with the flow. I didn’t plan anything. I did things spur of the moment. It was exhilarating!

“Life gives you plenty of time to do whatever you want to do if you stay in the present moment.” — Deepak Chopra

What’s the lesson here? Whatever you think you may be doing a day from now, forget about it! Life is too short for long lists. You’ll be glad you didn’t plan ahead. Be in the ‘present’ and things will turn out fine.

Do you tend to make lists and plan ahead?
