Changing the World One Nude At A Time

COM0011 – Blog #3

The last two weeks have been quite heavy on most of the global population. Between the murder of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter protests, and excessive police brutality throughout these events, it’s clear that the world needs to drastically change. People have been raising funds for numerous organizations, such as Black Lives Matter, The National Bailout, Official George Floyd Memorial Fund, and Black Visions Collective. Celebrities, as well as regular people, have been using their social media platforms to increase charity and awareness on the matter. Although it’s been successful, I’ve noticed that individuals have been turning to a newer platform to entice people in doing so: OnlyFans.

OnlyFans allows users to post the content of their choice, ranging from simple day-to-day activities to adult rated postings. While the website did start off on a more innocent note in 2016, it has gained a lot of recognition since, and people started using it to gain extra income by publishing more carnal ventures. The follower must pay a monthly subscription to the earner’s page to have access to their exclusive posts. Users like Matthew Camp (@matthewcamp/OnlyFans) have been able to supplement their income by thousands of dollars a month. After an interview with The New York Times, Camp mentioned that he can make up to $1000 in a night, and more than $10,000 monthly. Seeing how much fundraising potential the platform has, numerous people decided to join the program as a means to raise money and awareness for the current global events.

Two young women, Sabrina (@sadsleepygirl23/Twitter) and Rax King (@RaxKingIsDead/Twitter), have collectively raised over $27,000 through their OnlyFans subscribers to be donated to multiple associations. A friend of mine, Mustang (@feetmama69/OnlyFans), decided to take action as well, and started attracting prospect subscribers to her OnlyFans page by donating 100% of her subscriptions for 5 consecutive days to the Peoples City Council Freedom Fund. She was able to raise $873.

Mustang shares a screen capture of the funds raised through her OnlyFans subscribers throughout the last five days, and the donations given to the Peoples City Council Movement. Tuesday June 9, 2020. @mustang_mama69/Instagram.

Many people have been taking the initiative to raise awareness and funds to donate, but OnlyFans has clearly been one of the leading platforms in doing so. I mean, who wouldn’t want to pay for a (cheap) subscription, knowing that it’ll be going to organizations that will help change the world for the better, in exchange for nudes? Insider held an interview with Goddess Hunter (@hunternyc_/Twitter), where she expresses the following statement: “I’m just using my privilege and my platform because it’s the least I could do. […] If people send me money, they can send someone else money. Financial domination in sex work can work to benefit others as well”.

You can find a list of different operations where you can donate your money for the ongoing events here. I’d love to know if this ingenuity would persuade you to donate and if not, what would?

  1. Interesting read! I knew that OnlyFans has had a massive growth in the past few months and I am glad that many creators on that platform followed suit to Youtubers and donated portions or all of the revenue to Black Lives Matter and more. I hope that this provides an opportunity for creators on the platform to be seen differently as well since there are still so many stigmas regarding that type of work.

    • Hi Courtney,

I loved everything about your comment, especially when you raised the fact that there are a lot of stigmas regarding sex workers. Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for sharing your uplifting thoughts on the matter!

  2. Hi Elisasbeth This is a read. I think that some of the people raising money on OnlyFans are Doing it for themselves and they are capitalizing on Black Lives Mater to up subscription
to their OnlyFans page page. I am sure they say it’s a good cause but it’s easy to jump on a bandwagon like Black Lives Mater I don’t think it’s going to change things in the United States for a long time.

    • Hi Chris,

You’ve raised some pretty good points here. The people raising money through their OnlyFans account are looking to make money for themselves in the future – hence why they are asking people to subscribe. A lot of those accounts are using people’s first time subscriptions to donate to an organization that will help support POC (People Of Colour) during these times, but I think it’s safe to say that their future renewal subscriptions may be kept for themselves in the future – it is a lot of people’s sources of income after all. It’s not uncommon that people take advantage of other people’s marginalized issues to profit off of them, which may be the case for some OnlyFans content creators. Whether cash is involved or not, I think that simply raising awareness on the tragic current events is already a big positive step for OF users, and for anyone, really.

  3. This was a very interesting read, thank you for sharing! Do you think users will continue to use their OnlyFans accounts for fundraising beyond the Black Lives Matter movement?

    • Hi Emma,

Thank you! That I cannot answer for sure. Personally, I believe that most people will keep most of their future renewed subscription profits for themselves, as it is a big part of most OnlyFans’ creators’ income. I would hope that creators on OnlyFans keep donating some of their profits after the protests die down, though. I know that a lot of creators are still, after two weeks, donating a lot of their subscribers’ tips and subscriptions to organizations, but, I think the answer to your question will reveal its truth in the future weeks!

  4. Interesting read, I had actually never heard of the platform, so thanks for the new information!

I read the other comments here and I do think Chris and Emma have a good point about individuals capitalizing on the BLM movement for their own gains.
Hopefully, they follow through on their intentions to give the money to the causes that they state they support. I do also think that if a continued commitment to these causes vanishes after a certain amount of time has passed, those who signed up because they wanted to support those causes through these individuals may well leave. That is a risk that those account users will have to weigh and that their followers will have to consider. After all, audiences on Social Media are not passive, and as we have seen, they can make themselves heard.

    Very interesting post, thank you!

    • Hi Sash,

Excellent point regarding the OnlyFans creator having to take into consideration that some of their subscribers may not keep following their OF platform when they do stop giving out portions of their OF income to organizations to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

      Thank you for your input!

  5. Wow, this is an eye opener and is further proof that sex workers are not a bunch of freaks. I interviewed Isa Mazzei who is a former cam girl and current Hollywood scriptwriter back in 2018 which forever changed my impression of sex workers. If anything the intensity of their experiences can help the rest of us understand the rawness of the world. Anyways, check out this interview! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0VWuUP4Zx8

    • Michael,

I checked out the interview, and it was such a good and insightful listen. Subscribed to your YouTube channel as well! Thanks for sharing!

  6. This is awesome to read I did my blog on the censorship of women’s nipples and think that having a platform like this is so great. Especially for people who are also artists who take really beautiful and powerful photos but, are having them taken down due to censorship problems. This is also great because these artists now can have a platform to not only safely post their work and not fear of it taken down they can actually get paid for what they love to do.

  7. Haha, I love this post. I did not know where you were going with it at the start but I like how you wrapped it all together. I have not seen anything about people raising funds through OnlyFans accounts but I mean, it makes sense! OnlyFans would not be my first instinct when thinking of donating, I am more of a reputable site kind of girl, but if it works, it works! Not everyone is willing to donate in the same ways. This is super creative and I fully support it. Thanks for sharing this!
