COM-0014 Blog #2 – Storytelling and Communication Styles

The art of storytelling is exactly that—an art. Something that can be crafted and improved with practice as you find your voice. It all begins with that spark of an idea to bring it to life.

What I’ve learned so far in this course, is that the way you communicate and the format used are paramount for becoming a successful writer—someone that keeps their audience coming back for more. Ask yourself, what is my spark that sets me apart from the rest?

Grammar has never been more important than when it is in the written form. People may forget what you’ve said, but when it’s written, it lasts forever. A simple grammatical error can instantly change your credibility in the readers’ eyes. Here’s a list of 20 writing mistakes that will take you from professional to amateur, all with one keystroke.

Draw the reader in by letting them know that really cool topic you’ve shared. Always remember to follow the “Inverted Pyramid Method” approach and don’t bury the lead paragraph.


Adapt to your audience, pay attention to what interests them. It’s essential to encourage engagement such as commenting, liking or sharing your blog. For example, if you’d like someone to comment on your post, ask a specific question that allows them to tell their own personal story. Engage back with them and start a dialogue – maybe you’ll learn something new yourself!

As Brian Clarks states in his article on Copyblogger, “Reading, at its fundamental essence, is not about absorbing information. It’s about asking questions, looking for answers, understanding the various answers, and deciding for yourself. Think of reading this way, and you quickly realize how this allows you to deliver unique value to your readers as a publisher.”
