C0M0011 Am I Antisocial Or Just Not A People Person?

Knowing The Difference Before Self Diagnosing

LET’S BE HONEST, you are probably reading this because you want to know why you avoid social interactions. You do not want to be one of those people that self diagnose but you are confused with yourself as to why you don’t like being around people. Let’s break this down. For starters, many people confuse antisocial personality disorder with not being a “people person.” When people hear the word “anti” they assume it means the opposite of whatever it may be, and this is not the case. By the time you’re done reading this, you’ll have a better assumption of whether or not you have ASPD (antisocial personality disorder).

Before we get started let’s define ASPD and not being a “people person.” There is a big difference between having APSD and not being a “people person.” For one, ASPD is a mental condition where the person will steady avoid social interactions with other people and tend to be a “bully” to others. For people with ASPD, being a “bully” consists of being disrespectful to people, knowing how to manipulate others for personal pleasure and gain, lacking empathy for people, and being very egoistic of oneself and/or superiority of oneself. Many people may refer to people with ASPD as sociopaths.

For someone who isn’t a “people person”, you don’t have the same mentality as someone who has ASPD (or maybe you can be a rude person if you share SOME characteristics of someone with ASPD). Not being a “people person” means you tend not to engage in many conversations, you rather not make new relationships and friendships, and you would rather be by yourself than to be with others. In all reality not being a “people person” just means you’re more independent and rather spend time with yourself rather than putting your time into other people.

If you are still concerned as to which category you fall under please contact your doctor to be professionally examined.
